Born
into a family of wood
carvers (her father and
grandfather were
'whittlers"), Joy Hall is a
self-taught artist. With a
block of wood and a set of
carving knives,
Joy creates her designs one
by one. Each piece is
sketched, carved and hand
painted with precise detail.
No two items are ever
exactly alike.
Carving for
more than 20 years now, we
first met Joy when her son
was born and she and her
husband Tom were stationed
at Quantico, Virginia. "I
wanted to stay home with my
new baby and still help out
with the family income." The
rest is History. Joy's work
has been featured in Early
American Homes Magazine, The
Museum of American Folk Art,
The National Museum of Women
in the Arts, and in
countless private
collections throughout the
country. She and her family
now reside in southern
Virginia.
Santas and
snowmen began as her
specialties but now she
carves for all seasons. Each
year she carves a series of
limited edition Halloween
and Christmas pieces. Also
included in her collections
are Noah's Arks, Nativities,
and an annual Santa, snowman
and ornament. All her
collections are on display
and sold exclusively at
Personally Yours in Historic
Occoquan, VA.
